Mr. Humberto Leopold (Humby) Quintana, age 94 of Griffin, formerly of Greenwood, South Carolina passed away on Monday, July 21, 2014 surrounded by his family at Brightmoor Nursing Center.

Mr. Quintana was born in Cayey, Puerto Rico on October 26, 1919. He is preceded in death by his parents, Pedro Mazzoranna Quintana and Maria Dolores Ortiz Quintana; his wife of 58 years Vera Drummond Quintana, formerly of Ninety Six and Greenwood, SC., sister, Judith Q. McDowell; brothers, Peter, Hector, Ralph and Gilbert Quintana. Mr. Quintana was a member of St. Mark Methodist Church in Greenwood, SC., where he was active member and Sunday School Teacher until his health declined. He attended and played baseball and was captain of the basketball team while at Williams College, Williamstown, MA until World War II broke out in Pearl Harbor. He and his roommate left college and joined the United States Army where he met and married his wife Vera at Camp Croft, SC., who was also serving in the United States Army. After the war had ended, he returned to Williams College. After graduating, he and his wife moved back to South Carolina, where he completed his Master’s Degree at Furman University. He taught and coached in South Carolina for 13 years. In his years at Honea Path High School, he took the Stringers to a record of 31 wins, 7 loses and 2 ties. In   1952 he had an undefeated season. After he left Honea Path he went to Mullins High School and lead them to the State A Championship. He was chosen as 1 of 3 coaches to assist the SC Coaches in selecting the players for the NC/ SC Shrine Bowl.

After leaving coaching, he joined Burlington Industries in 1959 as Personnel Manager in Altavista, VA. He later served as Personnel Director for the Klopman Division and Merchandising offices in Rockleigh, NJ and New York City. In 1973, he was named as an area Personnel Executive. He was appointed as Corporate Director in 1975, and was named Corporate Vice-President in 1976. In 1983, his responsibilities were broadened to include personnel, public relations and governmental affairs. Mr. Quintana was active in a number of industry organizations, including the North Carolina Textile Manufacturers Association, and the American Textile Manufacturers Institute. He also served as a director of the Southern Industrial Relations Conference and the Unemployment Benefits Association. He  retired in 1984 after 25 years of company service. He was an avid golfer and one of his highlights was playing with Ben Chenshaw in the 1981 Greater Greensboro Open Pro-Am.

The family would like to say a special thanks to his care givers, Louise and Breion and the staff at Brightmoor Nursing and Brightmoor Hospice for all of their loving care and support.  

Survivors include his daughter Kathy Newman and husband, Tim of Griffin, Georgia; grandson, Jesse Santaloci and wife, Andrea; great grandchildren, Taylor, Michael, and William all of McDonough, Georgia; sister-in-law, Marilyn Quintana of West End, North Carolina; brother-in-law, former Senator John Drummond of Ninety Six, South Carolina; cousin,  Francis Leoni of Puerto Rico; and numerous  nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Mr. Humberto L. Quintana will be Saturday, July 26, 2014 from 1:00pm until 2:00pm at Harley Funeral Home in Greenwood, South Carolina. Following the visitation, funeral services will be conducted in the Chapel. Interment will be in Greenwood Memorial Cemetery with full military honors.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Drummond, Sam Drummond, Ray Drummond, Steve Drummond, Jim Drummond and Duke Burnette. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that contributions be made to the Alumi of Williams College or to a charity of your choice in memory of Mr. Quintana.
