Ann Maddox

May 30, 1933 ~ November 12, 2017 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Mrs. Ann Jacqueline Bullington Maddox of Griffin, Georgia, peacefully passed away on Sunday, November 12, 2017.

Ann was born on May 30, 1933 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents Mary Ruth Cheek Bullington & John James Bullington, her only sibling Jane Bullington Harvie, her only son John James Maddox, and the love of her life, her college sweetheart, husband Bennie G. Maddox, Jr.

After graduating from Brosville High School, Ann attended Campbell College in Buies Creek, NC.  This would be the magical place where she and Bennie's extraordinary, devoted, life-long commitment of true love started. After a year of courtship, Bennie visited Ann at her home in Virginia and told her parents that he needed a souvenir to take home with him to Georgia.  The souvenir was Ann! They secretly eloped on July 6, 1951.

The young couple returned to Campbell College to continue their education.  As international tensions grew, and the draft was calling up young men to serve our country, Bennie enlisted in the Navy.  Ann continued her education while waiting on her beloved Bennie to return.  She moved to California and attended classes.  Supporting herself, she worked as a secretary, telephone operator, and served tea to the elderly at fancy social clubs.  Bennie's return moved them to Kingsville & Corpus Christi, Texas.  Ann completed her B.S. of Education at Texas A & I.

Her passion for teaching began in Texas, and continued in Atlanta, GA, Jacksonville, FL, and Griffin, GA.  Twice, she was chosen to be Teacher of the Year at Moore Elementary. Ann sincerely cared about all of her students, as well as the many wonderful friendships she treasured with her co-workers.  She was a member of the teachers professional organization ADK.

Ann was an active member of First Baptist Church, Griffin. She helped organize "Operation Christmas Child", and participated in VBS, XYZ, WMU, and many mission trips to Kentucky. She tirelessly supported the "clothes closet" community outreach program, Samaritan's Purse Ministry, and the Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief Mission. Ann found great joy in helping others.

Ann was a UGA Bulldog fan and loved going with the Griffin Bulldog Bus Gang on their many adventures.  She enjoyed being in Book Club, Garden Club, and traveling with First Friends.

Ann's beautiful life will forever by cherished in the lives of her children Susan (Keith) Pelt, and Cindy (Carson) Pate, grandchildren Brandon Pelt, Dylan (Brandie) Pelt, Beth (Brian) Makido, Caroline (Ross) Strickland, Katherine Anne Pate, Sarah Pate, and 6 great grandchildren.

The service of celebration and remembrance will be held on Sunday, November 19, 2017, at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church Bramlett Chapel in Griffin.  Rev. Brian McCartney will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Cheatham Room at FBC.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church Missions Fund, P.O. Box 908, Griffin, Georgia 30224
