“Serving God by Serving Others”
David Franklin Ogletree was born on May 6, 1952 in Griffin, GA to the late Otis Redding Dukes, Father, and Mattie Lou Ogletree Colbert, Mother. At the age of 65, David transitioned from this life on December 4, 2017. David spent his formative years in Griffin where he attended Fairmont High School and graduated from Griffin High School in 1971.
After graduating from Griffin High School, David began a storied career in the Armed Forces on June 1971 where he served his country faithfully in Ft. Hood, TX; Ft. Campbell, KY; Alaska, Vietnam, Korea and Germany through three retirements; having left in 1979 and 1980 with an Honorable Discharge and in 1988 as a Sergeant First Class (SFC/E7). While serving in the Armed Forces in December 1974, David attended and graduated from Central Texas College in the Pre-discharge Education Program. During his career in the Army, David was honored with several medals and letters of commendation for his leadership and enormous knowledge in field of aviation maintenance. His achievements as a non-commissioned officer were deemed “excellent examples for other soldiers to measure up to and reflected his ability to serve as an officer” (John Perdue, SGM, U.S. Army, 1983). After leaving the Armed Forces, David served as a Police Officer for the City of Griffin and later as Maintenance Professional at the United States Post Office.
Having served his country for a number of years, David devoted his efforts to community service and civil organizations including the VFW (Veterans of Foreign War) and his local homeowners association at Spivey Glen in Stockbridge, GA. David also served as a founding member of the Fairmont Alumni Association where he served as vice president, organized homecoming events, provided awards to local students, and participated in community functions.
Despite his retirement, David’s passion of serving his community continued throughout his efforts to extend a helping hand to the elderly in his hometown of Griffin, GA. He had a true servant’s heart. In addition to these commitments, David served a number of years as Consultant and Owner of Ojabaz Consultants, LLC; where he provided landscaping and remodeling services, as well as, helped others successfully start similar businesses of their own.
Helping others was David’s greatest joy. He spent a lifetime helping others, which he saw as his mission and served God through his service to others. Countless stories are told of his generous heart and persistent quest to help others along the way. He spent his days sharing his much beloved life lessons and offering helpful guidance to other Veterans, family and friends. A wanderlust at heart, David also loved to travel, and visited many states and the Caribbean post retirement.
Today, our family celebrates David’s life and his legacy of giving, love and service. He leaves to cherish his memory his sister, brothers, cousins, nieces, nephews and many special friends. In addition to his mother and father, David was preceded in death by his sisters, Shirley Ann Weems and Gloria King. Finally, having served in the Armed Forces with distinction, David will be laid to his final rest at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia with full military honors.
A visitation for David Franklin Ogletree will be Saturday, December 9, 2017 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, December 10, 2017 at 1:30 pm in the Chapel of Conner-Westbury Funeral Home with full military honors. The Interment will be on Monday, December 11, 2017 at 9:00 am at Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Dr., Canton, GA 30114
