Message from Doug and Anne Adams
July 18, 2017 11:36 AM

After so many years away from my family in Vaughn, it was such a wonderful pleasure to spend the long weekend with Ken, Gail, and Velma and to see Stacy in October 2015. Doug first got acquainted with Ken in 2001, when he gave us an overnight parking place for our motor home right in his side yard. Wish we could be there this week, but it's impossible

The weekend we spent with Ken and Gail in 2015, was a highlight for us that year. Doug, a Pennsylvanian, enjoyed Ken so much and has talked about his country accent ever since.--often imitating it when teasing me about my southern roots. Gail, I will always remember the wonderful way you and Ken both welcomed us into your home that weekend feeding and entertaineing us royally. We were planning to see you this spring, but Doug's visits at Mayo Clinic changed our schedule--oh how I regret that.

One memory I'll always treasure is how my mom, Ken's great Aunt Florrie, so often talked about how much she loved him and what a joy it was in the years between his childhood and manhood, when he would come walking into her kitchen and say, "Aunt Florrie, I'm hungry--make me a ho-cake." To her that was a big biscuit (or maybe cornbread) in an iron skillet and he'd pour syrup all over it and spend time talking with her while he ate her "fast food." Velma, the years she lived with me, when she got mad at me, she'd say, "well I'll just go live with Velma, then." No matter how far we roam in our lives, we always yearn for our roots, and in 2016, I found myself doing just that on that Saturday morning as I gazed out Ken & Gail's front windows at the mist rising among the pines across the road. Have loved reading all the tributes to Ken and am touched by how much he was loved and respected among the people of Spalding County. May the Lord bless you and give you comfort at this very tragic time in your lives. I love you.

Gail and family, Randy and I were both shocked and saddened to hear of Ken's passing. He was a fine, Godly, hard working man and thought of with admiration. His "good ole country boy" attitude made him unique and such a joy to be around. We will always cherish the time that he was our deacon and the monthly phone calls and check ups he gave us. And it is forever in our memory that you Gail was with us on the tragic day 9/11 in the waiting room on the hospital as Randy was having back surgery. It meant the world to us that you took the time to be there. You and Ken were a perfect couple and we love you both dearly. We will keep you in our prayers as we know this is a hard time as well as the many days and years to come will be. Ken made it a better world to be in and we were blessed to call him friend. Love and prayers to you all.

Message from Preston Varnadoe
July 17, 2017 6:57 PM

Ken Patton was the strongest man I have ever had the privilege to call my friend. Not just his muscles, everyone knew about those but I was more impressed by his strength of will and his equally strong character.

I knew I could always count on him when I needed help with something. The line to a current song comes to mind “There’s nothing he can’t drive and nothing he can’t fix”. That about sums up Ken’s mechanical skills but it also sums up his attitude towards his friends.

During the last few days I have been asked how long I have known Ken. The answer is I can’t remember not knowing Ken. As kids, as teenagers, as young adults, being parents and being grandparents. Ken was always there with a quick smile and a really strong handshake.

He certainly had an adventurous and competitive soul. Riding a bicycle, a pair of skis, racing motorcycles or jumping out of an airplane. He had to do it first and do it better and he had the scars to prove it. I do remember him having a bit of a challenge learning to ride a unicycle but like everything else with wheels (or a wheel) he never gave up and he mastered it. I’m not sure if the discussion of who rode more miles on the motorcycle trip to west coast, Ken or Howard, was ever settled. After all, miles in a wrecker after a breakdown don’t count, or do they?

And for those of you that mentioned Ken’s affection for overalls. The cutest tribute I have ever seen was all of Ken’s granddaughters wearing overalls to his 60th birthday party. And yes he even took his overalls on a Caribbean cruise. Gail wouldn’t let him wear them but you just know he argued with her about it.

July 17, 2017 6:29 PM

Gail, Mrs Velma, Brad, Clint, Stacy and family. You guys are all family to us, and we are here for you all. Ken was a good friend to us and we loved him like a brother. We will both miss his humor, his laughter, and his "cutting-up". You never knew what he was going to say next, or when Gail would holler "KEN"! He knew when to behave after that happened....(most of the time!)
He was a hard working man that loved and provided for his family. Gail, you might have been "his ole lady", but everyone knew he loved and adored you. And Brad and Clint, hearing your daddy tell you that last day how proud he was of you two, that was so special and something you will remember all your lives. Your daddy loved you and your girls so much.
We love you all, and we feel your loss so deeply. Lean on God and let Him hold you all through your loss.
Love, Carolynn (&Bill) V

July 17, 2017 5:21 PM

This is still just like a dream. Mike and I can't believe that he is gone. Ken had this sense of humor that would keep you laughing. Spent many weekends with Ken, Gail and the boys camping at the lakes and made many great memories. Our children have many memories of him teaching them to ski, ride the knee board, and whatever else he could talk you in to. Ken was one of the hardest working men that I know and he provided a great life for Gail and his boys. I pray for peace and comfort for Ken's family and all his dear friends as this is such a difficult time for us all. Until me meet again, RIP my friend.

Gail, Mother & I are heartbroken to learn of Ken's passing. From my first memories of him & the Patton family m-a-n-y years ago, he was the source of many smiles & laughter at his antics; and he had that special something that lit up a room as soon as he entered it--you always felt better after being around him!! We've also known you since you were a wee one and always thought that you two were perfect for each other!! So many wonderful memories from our years at New Salem Baptist Church!!

We offer our deepest condolences to you, Clint & Brad & their families, Mrs. Velma and to all other family & friends who loved Ken. It is our hope & prayer that Our Heavenly Father will hold all of you close & wrap you in His loving arms to ease your pain & bring you peace; and that the many wonderful memories you have of times you shared will bring comfort to your hearts. Rest in Peace, Ken! You will be greatly missed!! Even at this sad time, I can't help but smile when I think of him!!!

Gail and family,

My heart breaks for you, especially during this difficult time in life. Ken was a man that so many will never forget, I will always remember him hitting me in the arm every time he would see me... I don't think he realized how hard he would actually hit. LOL

I told Carolynn Varnadoe yesterday that I bet Ken already hit Jesus in the arm, we had a good laugh in the midst of our tears.

May God give you great comfort in knowing that Ken is with Him in Heaven. I have no doubt that he knew, that he knew, that he knew... he would spend eternity with Jesus.

Love always,
Lisa

Knowing Ken was such a privilege. He always had a ready smile and a quick retort. He loved to pick on everybody and get something started. He will surely be missed. We love you, Gail and family and will continue to pray that God will lead you and comfort you today and all your tomorrows.
