Mrs. Lorene Steele Elrod, age 93, passed away on July 1, 2017 at Brightmoor Nursing Center.

 

Mrs. Elrod was born on September 4, 1923 to the late William Franklin Steele and Essie Lee Kimbell Steele of Jenkinsburg.  She is also preceded in death by her husband, Joel Neely Elrod, Jr., son Joel David Elrod, grandson Stephen Taylor Elrod, brother, William Lee (Doug) Steele and special cousin, Mary Ellen Middlebrooks.

 

Mrs. Elrod was a graduate of Draughon Business School in Atlanta and was employed by Randall Brothers of Atlanta and later Griffin Grocery prior to her marriage to her childhood sweetheart who predeceased her by twelve days.  They were both active members of Southside Baptist Church for many years.  Mrs. Elrod was a member of the KIT Club, Baptist Women and had served as a Sunday School teacher and VBS volunteer and also worked as a Red Cross volunteer.  She will be remembered as a sweet lady of great faith and a servant’s heart.  She was a devoted wife, mother and MeMaw/MeGee and adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved big family get-togethers.  She was an excellent cook and homemaker and loved to go shopping. 

 

Mrs. Elrod is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kaye and Carroll Triplett of Lexington, SC; daughter-in-law and her husband, Cindy Elrod Shoemaker and Jerry Shoemaker of Griffin; grandchildren, Daniel and Rebecca Triplett of Gilbert, SC; Susie and Nicky Smith of Lexington, SC; Natalie and Chris Spangler of Griffin; Greg and Brittany Elrod of Charleston, SC; Lydia and Todd Lyon of Macon, GA; ten great grandchildren, Joseph, Kiley, Landon, David, Stephanie, Avery, Evie Kate, Tyler, Sophia, and Addilyn; sister-in-law, Betty Leverette; nieces Sherry (Everett) Thrall and Joyce (Louis) Adams, nephew, Ben Leverette and special cousin, Beautye Tyus.

 

The family would also like to extend special thanks to loving caregivers Wanda Driver, Jeanette White and Andrea Matthews.

 

A visitation for Mrs. Elrod will be on Saturday, July 8 from 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home.  A graveside service will be conducted at 3:00 pm at Oak Hill Cemetery with Dr. Mark Sellers officiating.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Southside Baptist Church.
