Mrs. Rosa M. Callaway, age 97 of Griffin, Georgia passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at Westbury Medical Care Home in Jackson.

Mrs. Callaway was born February 17, 1920 in LaGrange, Georgia. Mrs. Callaway was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Maxie Cleveland Ison; her husband, Wallace Callaway. She was retired manager of Suburban LP Gas Company. She served as president and board chairman of the American Cancer Society, Spalding Unit for 12 years.  Mrs. Callaway was also as Volunteer of the Year in 1964.  She helped organize the Women’s Bowling Association, served as treasurer of the association; served as president of the Griffin Monday Night Ladies League and on different committees over the years.  She served as an officer in the Wednesday Morning Ladies league and on the Board of Directors for the Association at various times over the years.  She was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church for over 70 years, former choir member, had served as adult Sunday School Superintendent, Treasurer and Adult Sunday School Teacher for Vota Vita Class and former WMU Director.  Mrs. Callaway was the first woman to be elected to the Griffin Board of City Commissioners and first women to serve as Mayor of the City of Griffin; served as a member of the Griffin-Spalding Development Authority, representing the City of Griffin; former Chairman and Secretary for the Griffin-Spalding Community Relations Council. She was a member of the Griffin Elks Lodge Auxiliary where she served as president at different times. She was very active in a community that she loved.  She was a member of many other organizations, clubs and committees including the Spalding County Republican Party, local, state and national elections.

She is survived by her sons, Grady Morris, Jr and his wife Pat, Paul Callaway and his wife Becky; grandson, Clayton Morris; great granddaughter, Jennifer Morris.

Visitation for Mrs. Rosa M. Callaway will be on Saturday, June 10, 2017 from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm and on Sunday from 1:00 pm until 1:40 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. A graveside funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, June 11, 2017 at 2:00 pm in the new section of Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contribution may be made to American Cancer Society.
