Sarah Jones Cheatham

April 5, 1916 ~ November 1, 2017 (age 101) 101 Years Old

Mrs. Sarah Baldwin Jones Cheatham passed away on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 in Atlanta, GA. She was born in Canton, GA on March 5, 1916 to the late Louis Lindley Jones and Pearl Turner Jones. After graduating from Canton High School, she attended Randolph Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, VA for one year and then graduated from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA in 1936. While there she was awarded several honors among them the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa designation.

 On January 20, 1938 she married Robert Wycliffe Cheatham and lived in Griffin, GA until 2006 when she moved to Canterbury Court in Atlanta, GA. Mrs. Cheatham was involved in many organizations in Griffin while raising their five children. She was an active member of First Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for over 50 years. She was also involved with the RA and GA youth programs at the church. In addition to church work, she was also a member of the DAR, garden club, the PTA, and other organizations. After her children were grown, she became very active in duplicate bridge where she was a Director, teacher, and earned the award of Life Master from the American Contract Bridge League.

Mrs. Cheatham was predeceased by her parents, her husband (Bob), her daughter (Elizabeth Cheatham Hockett-VanHoy), and her brother (Louis Lindley Jones, Jr.) She is survived by her children: Sally Cheatham Copeland (Dallis), Lindley Cheatham Boggess (Tom), Dr. Robert W. Cheatham, Jr. (Sandy) and Cecil Cheatham Hines (Jim).  She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.  Her sister and brother, Peggy Jones Smith and John Turner Jones, also survive her.

Visitation will be Friday, November 3rd at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home at 12:30pm.  Graveside services will follow at 2:00pm with Dr. Bruce Morgan officiating at Oak Hill Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church of Griffin or the Scholarship Fund of Little Children of the World (LCW)
