Vernon Ray Twyman, age 82, of Griffin, passed into eternity on Friday, July 7, 2017 at Piedmont Henry Hospital.
Mr. Twyman was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on February 5, 1935. He is preceded in death by father Jesse LaVerne Twyman and mother Viola Sylvan Gatewood and by his grandparents who raised him, Jimmie Lewis Twyman and Margaret Jesse Clark. Mr. Twyman was a highly decorated veteran of the United States Air Force, retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant after having served 22 years. He served mostly abroad at U.S. airbases in Asia and Europe and was a veteran of the Vietnam War, earning many distinctions and during his years of devoted duty, including both Bronze and Silver Stars.
After retiring from the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Twyman went on to distinguish himself as an aerospace engineer working for Northrop Grumman, filling a key role in the development of the B-2 Stealth Bomber. After retiring from Northrop, he and his wife, Sharon, relocated from California to Georgia where he lived until his passing.
Mr. Twyman was a loving husband, grandfather and great-grandfather who loved to spend time with family and friends. He is survived by his wife Sharon Ann Bonham, and his nine children: Vernon Twyman Jr., Sherryl Matos, Terry Porter, Rodney Twyman, Michael Behning, David Behning, Greg Behning, Eric Twyman, and Lisa Wolgast and 23 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by five sisters and one brother.
A visitation for Vernon Ray Twyman will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Following the visitation, a funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at 1:30 pm.
