Mr. Joe B. Land, Jr., age 91, of Griffin, passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Christian Ministries Hospice.
Mr. Land was born in Eatonton, GA on May 2, 1918 to the late Mr. Joe B. Land, Sr. and the late Orpha Mae Mitchell. Mr. Land was proceeded in death by his wife, Lucille Bethune Land; brother, Edward Land; sisters, Edith Collier and Mabel Land. He was a retired self employed plumber. Mr. Land was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He entered the Army in July of 1941 and was stationed at Schofield Barracks on Oahu in October of 1941 and served throughout the pacific during World War II. He was a member of D Company, 34th Combat Engineers in Kaneobe when Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941. Mr. Land attended numerous Pearl Harbor Survivor reunions including the 50th Anniversary held in Honolulu in 1991. As a member of the America’s greatest generation, Mr. Land spoke with pride about his service to our country.
Survivors include sister-in-law, Louis Land; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Graveside services for Mr. Joe B. Land, Jr. will be conducted on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 1:00 pm in Westwood Gardens. Reverend Keith Wesley will officiate. Friends may visit the family one hour prior to the service at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Griffin-Spalding County, P.O. Box 758, Experiment, GA 30212.
