MSgt. U.S. Army (retired) Joseph Leo Birmingham, age 80, of Griffin passed away Monday, July 26, 2010.
Mr. Birmingham was born in Homer, NY on April 1, 1930 to the late James Birmingham and the late Ida Sagel Birmingham. Mr. Birmingham was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Birmingham; brothers, Bernard Birmingham, Tom Birmingham, and Jim Birmingham.
Mr. Birmingham was a 23 year veteran of the U.S. Army and specialized in Explosive Ordnance Disposal. While serving in France, he worked on munitions special effects for the 1962 movie “The Longest Day”. He retired in 1970 and the family relocated from Germany to Forsyth.
Mr. Birmingham is survived by his wife, Susan Evans Birmingham of Griffin; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Sher Birmingham of Valley, AL; daughter, Nita Birmingham of Barnesville; grandchildren, Valerie (Jeff) Faircloth of Fort Mitchell, AL, Janet (Rich) Clark of Gordon, Josh Birmingham of Athens, and Hannah Birmingham of Valley, AL; 5 great grandchildren; sisters, Ann Mattingly, Mary Sagel, Ellen Musgrove all of Missouri, Stella Thompson of Tennessee; brother, John Birmingham of Texas; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Joseph Leo Birmingham will be conducted on Friday, July 30, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel on Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Pastor (son) Bill Birmingham will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit the family on Thursday, July 29, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
