Bobby Griffin

Robert Carl “Bobby” Griffin, age 73 of Griffin, Georgia passed away on Friday, May 19, 2023 at the family home following an arduous battle with COPD and Small Cell Lung Cancer. He was born August 5, 1949 at Garfield Park Community Hospital in Cook County, Illinois, to Albert Edison Griffin and Elfrieda Marie Vetter Griffin. The family soon located to Griffin Georgia, where Bobby graduated from Highland Elementary School, Spalding Jr. High School, Griffin High School Class of 1967 and West Georgia College in Carrollton, Georgia in 1971. Bobby was nicknamed “Pickle” by many friends and family.

Bobby taught math for 1 year in Spalding County prior to beginning his career with the State of Georgia, Coweta County DFCS, where he remained over 30 years and retired as Supervisor. Playing golf was a major pleasure until his illness prevented him from participating in the sport he enjoyed so much with his golf buddies. He was the consummate baseball fan, with the Atlanta Braves being his favorite team. He loved music, especially the Beatles, building bluebird houses, caring for his hummingbirds, doting on his beloved felines and writing poetry/songs. Bobby was a master of words and had a knack for reeling you in with his creations.

Preceded in death by his parents, he is survived by his devoted wife, Oma Doris Ponder Griffin, of Griffin. Following a 14-year courtship, they married in 2020 and enjoyed their “simple little existence” as much as health and fate would allow. Bobby is survived by one sister, Rebecca Griffin Speight, and spouse, Randall Seamster of Griffin, Georgia; nephew, Jacob Speight, wife Jen, and son, Amos of Nolensville, Tennessee; nephew Benjamin Speight and daughter, Luna Marie Speight-Fisher of Decatur, Georgia; and his beloved feline purr-ball companion, AmayZen-Grayce.

The family will be eternally grateful to the staff of Brightmoor Palliative Care and Brightmoor Hospice for the loving, compassionate services provided to them during the care of Mr. Griffin.

It was Mr. Griffin’s request that flowers be omitted; and should you wish to honor him, to simply remember him fondly or perform a random act of kindness in his memory.

A visitation will be Wednesday, May 24, 2023 from 12:30 pm until 2:00 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow in the chapel.
