Charles Alvan "Al" Crowder Sr

Mr. Charles Alvan “Al” Crowder, Sr., age 89 of Griffin passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2022.

“Big”Al was born in Griffin, Georgia on August 27, 1933. He is preceded in death by his parents, Marvin Crowder and Collie Wood Crowder; brother, John Winston Crowder; sisters, Mary Crowder King and Martha Pope Crowder. Al was employed in the life insurance business for many years and always said that the hardest thing to sell is something that you can’t see. He was well known for his exquisite singing voice and charming conversation as he never met a stranger. He loved nature and the outdoors and sharing that love with his children and grandchildren. Al appreciated a well-kept lawn and wasn’t afraid to shoo away an errant grandchild digging around in the yard where they shouldn’t be. He was a first-rate driving instructor and taught these skills to his children and grandchildren sometimes at the cost of the wonderfully manicured grass. Family came first for Al, and he is loved dearly for that.

Survivors include his wife, Merrilyn Aiken Crowder; son, Charles Alvan Crowder, Jr.; daughter and son in law, Ivy (spouse Carl) Goolsby; grandchildren, William Oliver (spouse Kelly Wegel), Lindsay Crowder, Merry (spouse Trevor) Neal, Bella Spencer, Gabriel Spencer, Ian Spencer; great grandchild, Noah Neal; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Friday, October 21, 2022 from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Following the visitation, a funeral service will be conducted in the chapel with Pastor Gene Luke officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
