Retired Commander Donald Gordon Futral, age 72 of Griffin, passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2019, at Eternal Hope Hospice.
Don was born on January 8, 1947 in Griffin, Georgia. He is preceded in death by his parents, John “Gordon” Futral and Mamie Fullilove Futral. Don retired from the United States Navy, having served during the Vietnam War as a helicopter pilot specializing in antisubmarine warfare and search and rescue. He was a loving husband and father; and won the love and respect from all who knew him. From his early years growing up at the Experiment Station in Griffin to his final day, he touched so many with his quick wit, his kindness, his incredible intelligence and his gift of respect and non-judgmental approach to all. He was truly a gift from God to his family and to his friends. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Griffin.
He is survived by his wife, Lynn Shelton Futral; children, Kurt Maxwell “Max” Futral and fiancé’ Dr. Paul Baker, Alexandra Nicole “Allie” Futral and fiancé’ USAF Cpt. Jack Muka; sister, Carol Futral Hawkins and husband Tom; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
A visitation for Retired Commander Donald Gordon Futral will be Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Griffin. A Celebration of Life service, including full military honors, will follow the visitation. Dr. Bill Hardee will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests contributions to the First Baptist Church Benevolence Fund.
