Ernestine Gattis

Mrs. Ernestine Hyman Gattis, age 98 of Griffin, passed away on Friday, September 16, 2022 at her residence.

Ernestine was born in Miami, Florida on July 13, 1924. She is preceded in death by her parents, John Hyman and Essie Baxter Hyman; husband of 57 years , John Gattis; sisters, Janie Fender, Anne Franks, Alice Gratteau; brother, John Hyman. Ernestine was retired from Southern Road Builders as their bookkeeper. She was the oldest living member of The Hill Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia, and she attended First Baptist Church of Griffin for many years.
Ernestine enjoyed sewing, painting, ceramics and arts and crafts of all kinds.  She especially enjoyed working on projects with her great grandchildren.  She was very involved in WMU at The Hill Baptist Church in Augusta.  She enjoyed her Lydian Sunday School class and the XYZ group at First Baptist Church Griffin.  Her special friends at The Dairy took her in when she first moved to Griffin, and held her close through her final days. 

She is survived by her daughters, Susan Fouraker (Clinton), Jo Ellen Waller (Ike), Becky Fordham (Morgan); grandchildren, Stephanie Davis (Mark), Christie Ilgenfritz (David), Carrie Anderson (John), Andy Waller (Kelly), John Waller, Samantha DePue, Taylor Fordham (Whitney); great grandchildren, Alyssa Harmon (Matthew), Cameron Davis (Bridget), Parker Anderson, Asher Anderson, Alexandra Ilgenfritz, Aiden Ilgenfritz, Jim Waller, Addie DePue, Ford DePue, Kate DePue, Cooper Fordham, Eli Fordham, Avery Fordham, Luca Fordham; great great grandchildren, Max Harmon, Eli Harmon; many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at Griffin First Baptist Church on Friday, October 14, 2022 at 11:00 AM with a visitation following the service.

Graveside service will be held in Augusta at Westover Memorial Park at 11:30 A.M. on Saturday, October 15.
