Gwendolyn Murphy

Gwendolyn “Gwen” Murphy age 94, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 12, 2022.

Gwen was born in Cabarrus County, North Carolina on August 24, 1927. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ila Odell and Homer Hobson Thompson; son, Patrick; and siblings, Martha and Harold. After high school, Gwen attended Georgia College for Women in Milledgeville. She retired from Spalding County Department of Family and Children Services, where she provided support staff services.

Gwen is survived by numerous cousins, and was especially close with the family of Alan, Bonnie, and Heather Hardy. She had many friends and neighbors who were included in her inner circle. Gwen had a vibrant personality, was a great story teller, and never hesitated to say what she thought. She knew she was “slower than pond water” and made no apologies for her timeliness--or lack thereof.

She wanted to be loved and cared for all her life, was a good person, and had the best family and friends. Gwen was a member of New Salem Baptist Church and was active in the Silver Age Group there. Her hobbies were raising cows, watching golf, and watching the Atlanta Braves. She loved to swim, ride horses, play tennis, dance, and travel.

Visitation will be Monday, January 17, 2022 from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. A service will follow at 2:00 pm in the chapel, officiated by Reverend Mike Barnes.
