Tribute

Louise Patterson Gillespie
August 19, 1927 – January 7, 2021

Mrs. Louise Patterson Gillespie, age 93 of Griffin, passed away on January 7, 2021 at her residence. She was born August 19, 1927 in Macon, Georgia, the only child of Alvin and Edna Crawford.

Following graduation from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, a young Miss Lou Crawford came to Griffin to be a PE teacher and is credited with starting the first women’s basketball and tennis teams at Griffin High School. She quit teaching when her son Lewis was born but later returned to Griffin High as a science teacher in the late 1970’s until she retired from teaching in the early 1980’S.
Miss Lou had a love for the outdoors and shared a love for camping and hiking with her family. She was a lifelong Methodist and devoted member of Griffin First United Methodist Church where she remained active until health issues a few years before her death greatly limited her activity.

Miss Lou is preceded in death by her first husband Phil Patterson and second husband Al Gillespie. She is survived by her only child Lewis Patterson and daughter in law Katie of Griffin, grandson Henry Patterson of Detroit, Michigan and granddaughter Joni Marie Patterson of Athens, Georgia, stepchildren Jeff Gillespie of Indianapolis, Indiana, Kim Gillespie Linden of Roswell, Georgia and Carla Gillespie John of Sarasota, Florida along with several step grandchildren, along with family friend and her caretaker Kathy Fuller.
The family would like to thank the staff of Brightmoor Hospice along with the caretakers from The Woods Senior Care for their loving care and professionalism.

In Lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Griffin First United Methodist Church.
