Tribute

Nathaniel T. Shockley, Jr, age 85 of Griffin, Georgia passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2020.

Mr. Shockley was born in Griffin, Georgia on December 30, 1934. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel T. Shockley and Lucille Byous Shockley, a sister, Hazel Van and brothers, Joseph Shockley and Chester Shockley.
Mr. Shockley coached Griffin Rec. baseball and football for a number of years, known as Coach Shockley or ‘Slick’ by generations of ball players and their families. He led several Griffin Recreational baseball teams to championships up and down the East Coast. Once the family outgrew the recreation leagues, he became an avid fan of high school sports, which then carried over to supporting his grandchildren from the stands. He was his family’s number one fan!
During his golden years, Mr. Shockley was an inspiration and friend to many at Brightmoor Nursing Center, where he resided. He loved to sing anything from hymns to made-up jingles. He would often break out into song when the spirit moved him. The family would like to thank the nurses and aides, from Brightmoor for all the love and care they provided during his time with them.
He was a former charter member of Crestview Baptist Church; and later became a member of Carver Road Baptist Church. He also served in the Navy during the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, of 63 years, Barbara Jeanette Shockley, sons, T. Lyn (Sami) Shockley, Tony (Kay) Shockley and daughter Gayla (Mike) Smith.
