Retired Col. Robert Foster Howell, Jr., age 96 of Griffin, Georgia, passed away on Monday, February 12, 2018. Mr. Howell was born on October 20, 1921 in Buffalo, South Carolina. He is preceded in death by his parents, Princess Thelma Felton Howell and Robert Foster Howell, Sr. He is a 1939 graduate of Griffin High School and the Clemson University, Class of 1943. Mr. Howell is a Retired Colonel from the United States Army, a recipient of the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge, having served in World War II and the Battle of the Bulge with the 106th Infantry Division. Following his military career, he began working in the textile industry, traveling and living in many locations. In 1962, he and his family returned to Griffin and in 1964, he founded his company, R. Howell Enterprises, which began with him bringing the first of many self-service car wash facilities to much of the southern United States. After retirement, he and his wife continued their love of traveling around the world.

Mr. Howell is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Louise Dunlap Howell; his daughter, Nancy Howell Johnson of Griffin; his sons, Robert D. Howell and wife Jackie of Seattle, Washington, Charles K. Howell and wife Lynne, of Stockbridge; grandchildren, Shelby Foster and husband Joe of Newnan, Robert Stanley of Basel, Switzerland, Cpt. Charles J. Howell and wife Kristin of Ft. Meade, Maryland, Katie L. Howell of Tavernier, Florida; great-grandchildren, Hadley Howell and Charles Howell.

A private service with military honors will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make donations to Stepping Stones Educational Therapy Center, 141 Futral Rd, Griffin, Georgia 30224, in memory of Mr. Howell.
