Sara Ellen Martin

February 2, 1922 ~ January 18, 2020 (age 97) 97 Years Old

Tribute

Sara Ellen Martin, 97, passed away on Saturday, January 18th, 2020 at Brightmoor Hospice in Griffin, Georgia.

Sara is survived by her grandson, Jason Bonner of Atlanta; sister, Charlene Martin of Camillus, New York; nephew, Ted Hutson and his wife, Rosemary, of Griffin; niece, Helen Taylor of Griffin; and stepdaughter, Jane Bobo of Stockbridge.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Robert Martin; son, Charles Warren “Butch” Bonner Jr; and parents, Otto and Ethel Malone Biles.

Sara was born in Brooks, Georgia, on February 2, 1922. As a young woman, she lived in Manhattan with her husband, who was stationed there during World War II. Sara returned to Griffin, where she bore her only son and made her long-time home.

As founders of Atlanta Fire Extinguisher Co., Sara and her husband Robert built and managed their successful family business before passing the torch to her son. Sara joined the International Association of Rebekah Assemblies in 1951 and remained an active member for 60 years. Her term as the Rebekahs’ Noble Grand in the 1970s and the role’s many opportunities to travel the United States and Canada were two cherished memories. Sara was also one of the first women admitted to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, where she served multiple appointments over twenty years. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and named most virtuous woman in 2016.

Sara enjoyed gardening, crocheting, sewing, and spending time at her lake house in Hartwell. A blessing to family and friends, Sara was a staunch character with a quick wit. She lived by the credo “Enjoy every day and be happy... if you can.”

Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 21st, 2020 from 11:00am-1:00pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Service will be held on Tuesday, January 21st, 2020 at 1:00pm in the Chapel of Conner-Westbury Funeral home.
