Mrs. Shirley Higgins Hammond, a life-long resident of Griffin, passed away on June 4, 2021 at the Emory University Hospital Midtown. Mrs. Hammond was born on September 6, 1935 in Experiment, Georgia to the late John Bob Higgins and Omie Boswell Higgins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Coleman Hammond; brothers and their wives, Rev. Glenn P. Higgins, Sr. (Blandiner) and Barnie R. Higgins (Vivian); father-in-law and mother-in- law, Grover and Myrtice Hammond; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Janie Hammond Wallace and John Wallace; daughter-in-law, Tammy Hammond. Shirley was a Registered Nurse having graduated from the Georgia Baptist School of Nursing and enjoyed a career that spanned over fifty-nine and a half years. Although she loved her work, family was the focal point of her life. She was first a mother, caring for the needs of her family, followed by being an enormous part of the lives of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include her husband of sixty four years, Jack Mitchell Hammond, Sr.; children, Mitch Hammond (Susan), Ethan Hammond and Melissa Hammond Spence (Mark); grandchildren, Lauren Postell (Matt), Jordan Hammond (Brandi), Whit Long, Casey Long (Jenna), Jennifer Hammond (Will), Miles Hammond, John Richard Hammond and MaryScott Jones (Hunter); great grandchildren, Conner, Brody, Collins, SarahJane, Knox, Henry, Mason, Tyler, Jackson, Harper and Chrystal; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at 2:00 pm at the Conner-Westbury Funeral Home with Dr. Benny Tate officiating. Family will receive friends on Monday evening at the Conner-Westbury Funeral Home from 5:00-7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Rock Springs Church, 219 Rock Springs Road, Milner, Georgia 30257.
