Mrs. Shirley McDowell Johnson, age 83 of Griffin, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2019.
Mrs. Johnson was born on February 9, 1936 in Chester, South Carolina. She is preceded in death by her parents, William Edward McDowell and Gaynelle Baker McDowell; her husband, William Barteau Johnson. She was a 1954 graduate of Griffin High School. Her career included, Secretary for the Georgia Experiment Station, Life of Georgia, Law Offices of Cumming & Cumming, a Legal Secretary for Judge Andrew Whalen. She then attended Massey Business College to become a Certified Court Reporter for districts covering Fayette, Pike, Spalding and Upson counties. She was past president of the J Jayceettes, Griffin Chapter, past president of Legal Secretaries, Griffin Chapter, and a former Cub Scouts Den Mother. She loved ceramics, scrapbooking, embroidery, country music and Elvis. She was a member of Second Baptist Church of Griffin.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, William Thomas “Billy” and Mary Johnson; grandchildren, Bethany Michelle Eggleston and husband Steve, Kristin Leigh Johnson; brother and sister-in-law, William Douglas and Cheryl McDowell; several nieces and nephews of the McDowell and Johnson families.
A visitation will be Friday, November 29, 2019 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. A graveside funeral service will be Saturday, November 30, 2019 at 11:00 am in Oak Hill Cemetery. Family attending the service should assemble at the funeral home by 10:15 am.
