Mrs. Shirley M. Whitaker, age 79 of Griffin, passed away Friday, February 15, 2019 at Eternal Hope Hospice.
Shirley was born in Bethel Springs, Tennessee on June 18, 1939. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Maurice Isbell and Hazel Stallings Isbell; her husband, William Robert “Bob” Whitaker; son, William David Whitaker. Shirley served on several committees and was awarded the Mildred Rainwater 2001 Member of the Year, for her unselfish commitment and support to the Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce. She worked for and was a volunteer with the Griffin-Spalding Historical Society, the Griffin-Spalding County United Way, American Cancer Society; a volunteer at Stepping Stones Educational Therapy Center and First United Methodist Church; held State Office with the Ladies of the Elk’s Club in Griffin; she coordinated many fun and interesting trips for Griffin Federal Savings Bank.
She is survived by her daughter, Terri Shurley and husband Richard; son, Robert Lynn Whitaker; grandchildren, Bailey Shurley, William Gerald Whitaker and wife Kayla; brothers, Gary Isbell and wife Zalea, Doug Isbell and wife Ann; several nieces, nephews and extended family.
A visitation for Shirley M. Whitaker will be Thursday, February 21, 2019 from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Following the visitation, a funeral service will be conducted in the Chapel at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow in Westwood Gardens.
