Tunis Odell Crowley, age 94, of Griffin, passed away holding his devoted daughter’s hand on September 15, 2022. He had been surrounded the days before by his children, brother, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Tunis was born in Winterville, Georgia on July 13, 1928. He was preceded in death by his sweet wife, Vivian Boggs; parents, Joseph and Mozelle Crowley, grandson Ryan Crowley, one of his brothers and four sisters.
Tunis excelled in sports and was an All-State member of the 1945 Winterville High School State Championship basketball team. He received a basketball scholarship to Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee. However, after one year of college, Tunis enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt and USS Midway. Returning to the States, Tunis served in the Air Force Reserves while attending the University of Georgia and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Tunis was a dedicated Georgia Bulldog fan. He never missed attending or watching a Georgia game. While living at his previous neighborhood on Lauderdale Drive, there was always good-natured banter and laughs between Tunis and his opposing team neighbors. It went as far as painting the Georgia/Georgia Tech score on the street after a Bulldog win. Tunis was employed over thirty years as the general manager of Hanson Buick in Tucker. He was an avid golfer who had the opportunity to play in and win the 1978 Atlanta Classic Pro-Am paired with the renowned Jack Nicklaus. Also, Tunis was a Mason of the Masonic Lodge in Atlanta. Tunis was always generous and full of laughter. He loved life, and he loved his family and friends.
Tunis is survived by his daughter, Joan (Geoff) Voight; sons, Marc (Pam) Crowley, Alan (Cathy) Crowley; grandchildren, Lauren (Mike) Worley, Mitchell (Holly) Voight, Marshall (Libby) Voight, Michael Crowley, Casey Crowley, Matthew Voight, three great grandchildren, brother Ret. Col. Ronald Crowley, and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Tucker, Georgia at 3:00pm on Saturday, October 1st. A Georgia Bulldog Tailgate celebration will be held at 4:30pm at the home of Alan and Cathy Crowley in Peachtree Corners, Georgia. Friends and family are welcomed to attend.
