William Oscar “Pop” Ellis, Sr. was born August 24, 1944 to James Ellis, Sr. and Mytris Ellis Drewery. He departed this life on Sunday, June 24, 2018 at Wellstar Spalding Regional Hospital surrounded by loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James Ellis, Jr.
Mr. Ellis was affectionately known by family and friends as ‘Pop’. Pop graduated from Fairmont High School in Griffin, Ga. in 1963. After high school he attended Albany State University in Albany, Ga. Mr. Ellis joined the City of Griffin Police Department in June 1967 where he rose to the rank of Captain and Detective. He served on the Police Department from June 13, 1967 until his retirement on January 3rd, 1997. After he retired, he continued to serve in the community of Griffin. He was a Prince Hall Master Mason and managed the Police Youth Community Center for many years. He was a long standing member of the Corinth Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and treasurer.
Mr. Ellis leaves to cherish his memory: sons, Kel Ellis (Danise) and William O. Ellis, Jr.; daughter, April Ellis Wooten (Terry); 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
A visitation for William Oscar “Pop” Ellis, Sr., will be Wednesday, June 27, 2018 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. A funeral service will be Thursday, June 28, 2018 at 11:00 am at Corinth Baptist Church, 390 Merrybrook Rd, Williamson, GA 30292. Interment will follow in Westwood Gardens.
