Mr. Grady Alton Colwell, Sr., age 76 of Griffin, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at his residence.

Mr. Colwell was born on August 7, 1941 in Griffin, Georgia. He is preceded in death by his parents, E. Powell Colwell and Sara Brooks Colwell; brothers, Charles Colwell, Lamar Colwell, Harold Colwell; sister in law, Barbara Colwell, brother in law, Dee G. Sullins.

He graduated from Griffin High School and was a graduate of the Georgia Banking School at the University of Georgia in Athens. He was a banker for many years and started his career at The Farmer’s Bank of Locust Grove, Georgia as a teller in 1961 and in 1966 transferred to The McIntosh State Bank in Jackson, Georgia as Vice President of the Loan Department. In 1971, he moved to Toccoa, Georgia and became Vice President of The Citizen’s Bank. During his years in Toccoa, he served as President of the Toccoa Little League. He was a member of the Jaycees and Chaplain of the Toccoa Elks Club. In 1984, he moved back to Griffin and worked at Best Manufacturing and later became the owner of Broadway Grocery and Deli until his retirement in 2000. He is a member of Ringold Baptist Church in Griffin. He was an avid golfer until his health declined in recent years. He loved his family, his grandchildren were his pride and joy. He especially enjoyed going to their ball games. He was known as Papa C by many.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, JoAnn Green Colwell, having celebrated their anniversary on December 30, 2017. Also surviving Mr. Colwell are his children and spouses, Grady Alton Colwell, Jr. and Karen of Toccoa, Georgia, Christopher A. Colwell and Linda of Milledgeville, Georgia, Suzanne C. Foster and Chad of Griffin, Georgia; grandchildren, Kelli and Blake Ray of Cartersville, Georgia, Geoffry and Kayla Johnston of Tampa, Florida, Kenny Colwell of Toccoa, Georgia, Amanda Gregg of Griffin, Chase and Ashley Colwell of Augusta, Georgia, Andrew Colwell of Milledgeville, C.J. Foster and friend Ashleigh Rakestraw of Griffin, Lindsey Foster of Griffin; sisters, Joanne Colwell Sullins of Stone Mountain, Georgia, Faye Colwell of Griffin; mother in law, Omega B. Green of Zebulon, Georgia; numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Mr. Grady Alton Colwell Sr., will be on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at 3:30 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Visitation will follow the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Building Fund, Ringgold Baptist Church, 9 Jenkinsburg Rd. Griffin, Georgia 30223.
